Organizing & Maximizing Spaces

1.            CREATE designated areas. Designing a foyer is a great example of this.  Installing a small table with a mirror near the entryway will designate a spot for you to keep your keys and shoes.  Using decorative bowls for your keys and baskets/crates to hold all your shoes will make you feel more organized and less like you’re scrambling to find your things as you walk out the door.

2.            FIND pieces that can be dually functional. For example, take items that are necessary to keep but that don’t get used often and store them in a decorative box or crate.  Then, use that as a plant stand.

3.            COLOR coordinate. It will make you feel like you are in kindergarten again, organizing Crayons by color and shade.  Doing so will make your closet look and feel more clean, ultimately making it easier to find that shirt you want to wear.

4.            MOUNT things on the wall. This creates more floor space. By mounting a nightstand or a light fixture are two examples of pieces that can be wall mounted, and will free up floor space once moved.

5.            LESS is more. Maximizing space doesn’t mean using every inch of floor or wall possible. With an understanding that when it comes to smaller spaces you want to use as much of the space as possible, but the more things you try to fit in, the more cramped and cluttered it can feel. This is why wall mounting pieces can be so popular and practical.

6.             USE baskets and crates. Using these items is a major organizational tool. You can use them in every room if desired - in the foyer to hold shoes or mail, under the bed for storage, in the kitchen for holding storage containers or next to the sofa to hold blankets.

7.            MOVE your dresser to the closet. If you have the space for this, putting the dresser in the closet frees up space in the bedroom.

8.            INSTALL shelves.  Floating shelves, whether in your living room for books or in your closet to store shoes, can be a great way to organize and maximize.
